What is your name, age, classification and major?
Khaoula Kamal, 22, Senior, Biomedical Engineering

What year did you begin studying at MSU, and when is your expected graduation date?
Fall 2021, May 2025

Why did you choose to attend MSU, and why did you choose an engineering field of study?
I chose to attend MSU because it offered a renowned engineering education in the heart of Mississippi. Not only was I close to my family, but I also benefited from amazing faculty connections and research opportunities.

What are your favorite campus organizations you have become a part of?
In the past year, I began the American Medical Women’s Association to offer women across campus a chance to connect with one another. The medical field can be a gruesome path, but I have made it my goal to ease the process and educate my peers on advantageous opportunities.

I have also served on the MSU Student Association Senate for 3 years, during which time I created impactful legislation that aided pre-medical students and students with disabilities.

I have also been a part of WISDOM and the Biomedical Engineering Student Association, among other organizations.

What has been your favorite course you have taken at MSU and why?
My favorite course at MSU has been Physiological Systems in Engineering because it gave me a window into the curriculum I would be learning in medical school next year. I thoroughly enjoy learning about human anatomy, and Phys Sys did an excellent job of combining my passion for medicine with engineering.

Which course has been your most challenging at MSU and why? What was something you learned about yourself after taking that course?
The most challenging course at MSU was Bioinstrumentation I, for it served as the entry to electrical circuits beyond theory. In addition to other challenging courses in my junior year, I finally learned how to manage my time and in what ways I can excel in my curriculum. I learned that my mind can handle many different disciplines and that I thoroughly enjoy learning more about other fields.

What is one thing you have learned related to engineering during your time at the Bagley College of Engineering?
One thing I learned about engineering while at the Bagley College of Engineering is how to transfer my imaginative ideas and solutions into tangible results. This includes creating objects on software such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD that draw from my visual learning style.

How has MSU, specifically the Bagley College of Engineering, prepared you for professional life after college?
MSU and the Bagley College of Engineering have prepared me for the professional world by instilling grit and resilience in my academics and work. I have developed enhanced multitasking skills that enable me to handle any life situation, extracurricular activity, or academic application.

What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to attend the University of Mississippi Medical Center to pursue a degree in medicine. I am excited to learn more about the specialties I can explore, but at the moment, I am really passionate about cardiology and emergency medicine. I hope I can merge my knowledge of engineering with medical applications to create innovative research projects in the future.

What will you miss most about MSU after you graduate?
I will miss the community of faculty, staff, and students who have encouraged me throughout my journey and been a shoulder to lean on through the highs and lows of college. The last four years have provided irreplaceable experiences of joy and fondness that I will continue to search for in my life.
