Engineering alum elected to serve as ASCE regional leader

A Mississippi State University engineering alumna has been elected to a regional leadership position in the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Jennifer Sloan Ziegler, who has three degrees from MSU’s Bagley College of Engineering, will serve as a three-year term as one of two new Region 5 Governors. Region Governors serve on ASCE board and society committees and plan, organize, and manage events to engage and serve members in their region.
Region 5 is comprised of all the sections and branches within Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Puerto Rico.
Mississippi State engineering alumna Jennifer Sloan Ziegler has been elected as a Region 5 Governor for the American Society of Civil Engineers.
“I’m excited to continue my service to ASCE, the civil engineering profession, Region 5, and the Mississippi Section as a Region 5 Governor,” Sloan Ziegler said. “In this position I will work to support and further ASCE’s mission and vision to develop future civil engineers who are global leaders, building a better quality of life for all. I hope to continue my work with student members and young professionals, strengthening their relationship to ASCE and the profession.”
Sloan Ziegler, an engineer with Cypress Environment & Infrastructure in Jackson, Mississippi, has been active within ASCE for several years. At the society level, she is a presidential appointee to the Environmental & Water Resources Institute (EWRI) governing board and a member of the EWRI policy committee. She also serves on the Energy, Environment and Water Resources Policy committee and is the New Professionals Chair for the 2021 EWRI World Congress.
More locally, she is the 2020 President of the Mississippi Section of ASCE. She served as the Younger Member Group President for the Mississippi Section from 2016-2018. She is also a member of the Region 5 Younger Member Advisory Council.
Sloan Ziegler is a three-time Mississippi State engineering alumna. She earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 2010 before completing her master’s degree in civil engineering in 2012. She finished her Ph.D. in civil engineering in 2013. She also earned a master’s certificate in coastal engineering from the University of New Orleans in 2018.
The American Society of Civil Engineers represents more than 150,000 civil engineers worldwide and is America’s oldest national engineering society. The organization works to raise awareness of the need to maintain and modernize the nation’s infrastructure using sustainable and resilient practices, advocates for increasing and optimizing investment in infrastructure, and improve engineering knowledge and competency.
The Bagley College of Engineering offers a variety of degree programs across eight different academic departments while also ranking among the nation’s leaders in research and development expenditures according to the National Science Foundation.
