STARKVILLE, Miss. – Bagley College of Engineering emerged victorious following Rivals Week at Mississippi State University.
Pitting engineering majors against their peers in the business college, the inaugural event consisted of a weeklong slate of activities sponsored by the Entrepreneurship Club and the Engineering Student Council.
“Rivals week provided engineering and business students with the unique opportunity to interact and compete in the context of a fun and friendly competition,” Bradley Mason said.
Holding leadership positions in both sponsoring clubs, Mason played a significant role in helping the organizations plan each event so that the students could enjoy the friendly competition. The junior in biological engineering with a minor in business administration said he understands how relationships between students in the two majors can be mutually beneficial.
“Our goal is to encourage these students to spend more time together, because many will find that engineering and business majors are often both a part of major projects,” Mason said.
Rivals Week kicked off Sunday with traditional field day games including a three-legged race, egg toss and hula-hoop circle. Monday, participants showcased their quick wits with an improv competition featuring Lab Rats Comedy. Tuesday, the teams tested their knowledge with a trivia game at Buffalo Wild Wings. The final two days’ competitions challenged the students’ physical prowess with games of dodgeball and capture the flag.
The winner of each event was awarded 20 points, and the team with the most participants per event was given 10 points. After the first three competitions, the engineering department trailed by 10 points. The tables quickly turned when the Bagley students demonstrated their determination to succeed in the following competitions by earning the total 60 combined points necessary to come out on top. After five days of intense battles, the engineers defeated their opponents 100 to 50.
The team took home a 22-inch customized stainless steel cowbell provided by BattleBells.
“We are proud of the first-year success of this event, and we look forward to the yearly competition that Rival’s Week will provide to both colleges,” Mason said.
