Aerospace engineering student wins prestigious Goldwater Scholarship

September 13, 2016

sublett_johnieMississippi State senior, Johnie Sublett, an aerospace engineering major in the Bagley College of Engineering and a member of the Shackhoul’s Honor College, recently received one of the most prestigious undergraduate awards given in the sciences: selection as a Goldwater scholar for 2016.

Awarded by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship foundation, the honor goes to the top students nationwide who are planning to pursue a research career in the natural sciences, mathematics or engineering. Only 250 scholars are selected out of a pool of almost 1,200 nominations.

Sublett was the only student from a Mississippi college or university to earn the recognition.

“I’m excited to be able to represent some of the research being done within aerospace engineering,” Sublett said. “And I’m looking forward to more opportunities in graduate school.”

During his time as an undergraduate student at Mississippi State, Sublett has been involved in the aerospace engineering Hybrid Rocket Development Group, as well as undergraduate research and testing with NASA Marshall Space Flight Center.

After completing his undergraduate degree, Sublett hopes to pursue a graduate degree and conduct more research in the field of manned space flight.

Mississippi State’s last Goldwater Scholar was Matt Berk, also an aerospace engineering student, who won the award in 2013.
