Biannual career fair offers professional development, jobs

STARKVILLE, Miss.— With its biannual Career Days around the corner, Mississippi State will host multiple events to help engineering students prepare for the working world.
A two-day event, the career fair will focus on engineering and technical job opportunities Tuesday, Sept. 22 and Wednesday, Sept. 23 at Humphrey Coliseum from noon until 4 p.m. More than 190 companies seeking to fill co-op, intern and full-time positions are registered for the event. As a result of this year’s large turn out, the career fair will be open to engineering students on both days.
Associate dean of academic affairs, James Warnock believes that the career fair is an excellent opportunity that students do not want to miss out on.
“It’s an excellent way for students to get their resumes out to companies,” Warnock said. “On top of that, there is no better way to gain experience in the job market as well as network with potential employers.”
To make the most of their time at the event, students are encouraged to login to “Connections”: https://msstate-csm.symplicity.com/students/ through the university Career Center and familiarize themselves with the list of companies attending the event and the types of positions each has available.
To help students prepare for their first foray into the professional world, the university will also offer several preparatory events to explain the finer points of business dress and communication.
Tuesday, Sept. 15, students can attend Dress For Success at the Colvard Student Union Dawg House at 4 p.m. The hour-long event will help job-seekers learn how to invest in a professional wardrobe and what to wear to make a good impression when meeting potential employers.
A diversity networking reception for engineering employers and students will take place in the Dawg House the following week: Tuesday, Sept. 22 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Described as a “reverse career fair” this event encourages employers to meet and interact with students from diverse backgrounds while student organizations provide information about their work and members.
