STARKVILLE, Miss- A Bagley College of Engineering student received a scholarship at a national engineering organization’s conference.

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) named Darvin J. Griffin, a senior biological engineering major, a Fulfilling the Legacy Scholar at its Golden Torch Awards ceremony. Funded in part by the Kellogg Corporate Citizenship Fund, the scholarship was presented at the organization’s conference in Orlando, Fla.

“Receiving this scholarship recognition is very exciting. I am proud to be recognized as having made a positive impact on my peers,” Griffin said. “Being a part of NSBE has been a great experience and has offered me many opportunities to expand my mind, share my experiences and meet many professional engineers.”

The scholarship recognizes NSBE members who fulfill the group’s mission to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community. Griffin detailed his success in each area in an entry essay when applying for the scholarship.

As a student at Mississippi State, he has been involved in many organizations including outreach activities conducted by NSBE. In his time as an active club member, Griffin has worked as a peer mentor for underclassmen and helped organize a science fair workshop for local elementary students.

“NSBE is about giving back to the community and impacting students lives,” explained Dr. Tommy Stevenson, assistant dean for diversity programs and student development. “We are very proud of Darvin and hope that his success will help encourage other students to pursue national recognition.”

Griffin is a native of Shuqualak, Miss. In addition to participating in NSBE, he is an active member of the Institute of Biological Engineers and Increasing Minority Access to Graduate Education. After receiving his degree from MSU, he hopes to further his education by pursuing a medical degree in radiology.
