Mississippi State University’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering held the end-of-the-semester ECE Capstone Design Showcase, and three student teams were recognized for their projects.
The showcase highlighted the ECE Capstone Design II class. The students presented their two-semester projects to faculty, staff, students and visitors to demonstrate the culmination of their knowledge and skills. Each team produced a project that needed to incorporate appropriate engineering standards, fabricate designs, test projects and demonstrate fully functional projects.
The first-place team and winner of the Ed Blakeslee Senior Capstone Design Award was DOOMSEEK. Team members include Dalton Crawley, Randy Flatness, Sierra Nicholson and Hayes Temple, and the team’s project advisor was ECE Associate Professor Bryan Jones. Diagnostic On-site Observer and Maintenance Surveillance and Examination Kit (DOOMSEEK) is a remote-controlled robot designed to inspect high-voltage transformers, allowing technicians to perform detailed inspections without physically entering the transformer. Equipped with magnetic wheels, up to a 4K camera and LED lighting, it maneuvers safely across metal surfaces, making transformer maintenance safer and more efficient.
In second place was the Senior Capstone Design II group Ison. Ison is a pair of glasses designed for the visually impaired that detects text through a camera, sends the picture to an app and then reads the text to the wearer. The glasses have built-in speakers, allowing the glasses to discreetly read text to the user at the press of a button. Team members are Karl Butler, Albert Lum, Rayven McMillian, Daniel Stevens and Leah Vaughan. Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems Assistant Research Professor Lalitha Dabbiru served as the team’s project advisor.
Camp-Tenna received third place for its project of an auto-rotating cellular antenna that directs itself toward the strongest signal. Using a uni-directional antenna, the Camp-Tenna has a far connection range, which makes it ideal for more rural areas. Team members include Jacob Jordan, Holden Lewis, Joseph Martin, Drew Suttle and Patrick Thomas. Camp-Tenna’s project advisors were C Spire Distinguished Member of Technical Staff, Research and Development and ECE Advisory Board Member Ivy Kelly and Timothy Sellers.
The first-place team in the ECE Capstone Design course received the Ed Blakeslee Senior Capstone Design Award and $1,000. The Ed Blakeslee Senior Capstone Design Award was made possible through the generous donation of electrical engineer alumnus Ed Blakeslee.
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Mississippi State University has 27 faculty members (including seven endowed professors), seven professional staff and over 700 undergraduate and graduate students, approximately 100 of whom are Ph.D. students. With a research expenditure of over $14.24 million, the department houses the largest High-Voltage Laboratory among North American universities.
