Mohammad Marufuzzaman, an associate professor, has been named the interim head of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Mississippi State Bagley College of Engineering.
“I am pleased Dr. Marufuzzaman has agreed to serve as interim department head. His leadership in other areas in the department makes him an ideal candidate, and I look forward to working with him in maintaining the momentum of the Industrial and Systems Engineering program,” Robert Green, interim dean of the college, said.
Marufuzzaman is an expert in supply chain optimization, stochastic programming, and decomposition methods with specific applications in bioenergy security, and risk management. He began his career at Mississippi State ten years ago as an assistant visiting professor. Of his appointment, Marufuzzaman said

Since joining the Bagley College of Engineering in 2014, he has served as graduate coordinator for the department and has secured over $24 million in research funding, including grants from US Department of Agriculture, US Department of Defense, US Department of Energy, US Department of Homeland Security, US Department of Transportation, Environmental Protection Agency, and local industries. He published 75 peer-reviewed journal articles, including articles in Transportation Science, IISE Transactions, Computers & Operations Research, Computers & Chemical Engineering, Omega, and Annals of Operations Research, mentored three postdocs, and graduated 17 Ph.D. and six masters students.
Marufuzzaman’s work has been widely recognized in the Industrial and System Engineering professional communities. He received multiple Best Paper Awards from the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers (IISE) and the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Cleaner Production and Journal of Cleaner Logistics and Supply Chain and an Editorial Board member of the Computers & Industrial Engineering journal.
Marufuzzaman received his industrial and systems engineering doctoral degree from Mississippi State University in 2014. He received his master’s of applied science degree in industrial systems engineering from the University of Regina, Canada, in 2010 and a bachelor’s degree in industrial and production engineering from Shah Jalal University of Science & Technology, Bangladesh, in 2006. He joined the industrial and systems engineering department as a visiting assistant professor in August 2014.
