Letter from the Dean: February 2023

I hope your spring 2023 semester is off to a great start! There are a lot of exciting things happening in the Bagley College, and I’m pleased to tell you about some of our most recent points of pride:

• Computer science undergraduate student Emma Wade was named MSU’s first Churchill Scholar.
• Read about the work of aerospace engineering alum Bradley Tyree at Stennis Space Center.
• Alum Michael Hall and his wife Valarie have established several multiple endowments totaling $15M for the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
• If you are reading this newsletter while drinking coffee, you will especially like hearing about chemical engineering alum Dr. Kenneth Thomas’ Umble Coffee Co.
• The college’s outreach office recently hosted a Science Fair Teacher Workshop.
• The Office of Research and Economic Development issued a press release about MSU’s research expenditures in FY21. The college fared very well, placing #56 nationally with $67.4MM. Furthermore, the BCoE was highly ranked in three classification areas:
  • Industrial (18^th)
  • Aerospace (23^rd)
  • Mechanical (32^nd)
• The MSU Graduate School has issued a call for papers for the Graduate Student Research Symposium, which will be hosted on Saturday, February 25 at the Old Main Academic Center. Interested graduate students and faculty judges can register here.
