STARKVILLE, Miss. – A Mississippi State professor teaching and conducting research in mechanical engineering now holds the highest honor in an international society.
Thomas E. Lacy Jr., Ph.D., P.E., of the Bagley College of Engineering, was recently bestowed the rank of Fellow by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Lacy joins 24 other Fellows at the BCoE and is one of six ASME Fellows.
The ASME Board of Governors confers the Fellow grade of membership on worthy candidates to recognize their outstanding engineering achievements. Nominated by their peers, ASME Fellows have had 10 or more years of active practice and at least 10 years of continuous active corporate membership in ASME.
“I am humbled and honored to join the other distinguished MSU faculty members who enjoy the rank of Fellow in their respective technical societies,” Lacy said. “I am particularly grateful to the ASME Committee of Past Presidents for their kind assessment of my overall leadership in the engineering profession, as well as contributions to engineering education and research and development.”
The award of Fellow begins with a nomination form professional peers. Lacy considers the recognition to be a reflection on MSU’s commitment to excellence.
“The award of ASME Fellow to a MSU faculty member is an indication MSU’s commitment to excellence, as well as a clear reflection of MSU’s investment in people,” Lacy said.
A faculty member for the BCoE since 2004, he credits the decision to join the faculty to the high caliber of faculty members.
“I came to Starkville to have the opportunity to work with great minds in solid mechanics, such as Jim Newman Jr. and Mark Horstemeyer. “
Prior to coming to MSU, Lacy worked as a practicing engineer in the aerospace industry for roughly a decade and was also on the faculty at Wichita State University. He holds a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from the University of New Mexico, as well as master’s and doctoral degrees in the same field from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
