BCoE Online Learning

Mississippi State University (MSU) is a comprehensive land-grant institution founded in 1878 and located in north-central Mississippi near Starkville. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the university awards baccalaureate, master’s, educational specialist, educational doctorate, doctor of philosophy, and the doctor of veterinary medicine degrees. Fall 2021 enrollment totaled 23,086 with a graduate student body of 4,104. The faculty of MSU are formally engaged in juried and refereed scholarly creative activity, as proven by the university’s Doctoral Very High Research Activity ranking with the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. MSU holds SREB-Four Year 1 status.

The School of Engineering was created at MSU in 1902. Currently, the Bagley College of Engineering (BCoE) is ranked 82nd in the Best Graduate School edition of U.S. News & World Report. As of Fall 2021 graduate enrollment totaled 665. The college is comprised of eight academic departments and offers 12 master’s degrees and 12 doctoral degrees. Excellence in research is a high priority for faculty. The college is comprised of 178 total faculty including 102 tenure-track faculty members and 24 faculty members have been recognized at the Grade of Fellow (IEEE, ASME, ASCE, AIAA, ASTM, AIChE, ACS) and some boast more than one. The BCoE ranks 51st nationally among colleges of engineering in NSF-national rankings by research expenditures. With several state-of-the-art research centers and laboratories to provide hands-on experience for masters and doctoral students, excellence extends beyond the classroom offerings. The BCoE Strategic Plan focuses on the recruitment of MSU Engineering graduates by major, multinational companies and top research universities, as well as top academic universities. BCoE is committed to a diverse student body and seeks to enrich graduate education by providing a multiplicity of views and perspectives that enhance research, teaching, and the development of new knowledge.

The delivery of BCoE online courses and programs began in the mid-1980s primarily with faculty in Industrial Engineering and Electrical Engineering. With the introduction of its first interactive classroom in 1995, the Bagley College of Engineering at Mississippi State University was able to enrich students’ educational experiences by utilizing technology to expand classroom delivery options. The methods of distributing course content, synchronous and asynchronous, have certainly evolved since the time of mailing physical VHS tapes. Over the past few decades, the content has made a transition from an analog to a purely digital format.

Currently, the online programs are taught from nine rooms on the Starkville campus, as well as a satellite location in Vicksburg, MS. While some courses originate from Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC)-Vicksburg, all courses are recorded at the Starkville campus and uploaded to our OpenCast video system. This digital repository stores all our course content for each semester. Recordings of class lectures are available to students 24/7 in either an mp4 or flv file format, both of which can be viewed in a large variety of modern, freely-available video players.
