The Bagley College of Engineering is proud to announce the 2008 inductees into its student hall of fame. These students will be formally inducted in a ceremony later this month. This award recognizes students who have made outstanding contributions to their departments, the college and Mississippi State during their time here at MSU. The six students whose biographies are included below have been selected from nominations made by the faculty, staff and students of the college. Please join me in congratulating these students.
2008 Bagley College of Engineering Student Hall of Fame Inductees
Lauren Beatty is a senior biological engineering major from Newton, MS. Lauren will graduate in May with an emphasis in biomedical engineering and a minor in mathematics. Lauren was named the most outstanding biological engineering senior in the fall 2007. She has served as both secretary and co-vice president of the Institute of Biological Engineering and as the engineering student council representative for the Society of Women Engineers. She is a member of the honor societies Tau Beta Pi and Gamma Beta Phi. Lauren was a member of the International Genetically Engineering Machine competition team that brought home a bronze medal in the fall 2007. Lauren is also co-captain of the 24-member co-ed MSU cheerleading squad.
Darnisha Johnson is a senior electrical engineering major from Hazelhurst, MS. Darnisha started her academic career at Copiah-Lincoln Community College where she was involved in Phi Theta Kappa, served as a member of the President’s Council, and was inducted into Co-Lin’s Hall of Fame. Since transferring to MSU in the fall of 2004, Darnisha has been involved in the ECE Student Advisory Council, IEEE, the Society of Women Engineers, and the National Society of Black Engineers. She has also been inducted into the honor societies of Phi Kappa Phi, Eta Kappa Nu, and Tau Beta Pi. Darnisha participated in the cooperative education program serving four rotations with Georgia Pacific in Monticello, MS.
Charla Lindley is a senior biological engineering major from Jackson, MS. A member of the Shackouls Honors College, she has served as treasurer and vice-president of the Institute of Biological Engineering and is a member of the leadership team for the Wesley Foundation at MSU. She has been inducted into the honor societies of Tau Beta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi. Charla is also a member of Delta Gamma Sorority where she is active on several committees as well as intramural sports. Charla has been involved in the SimCenter researching particle deposition in human bronchial tubes. Her work has led to her being a coauthor on a journal paper as well as presenting her work at the Seventh Mississippi State-UAB Conference on Differential Equations and Computer Simulations.
Nashlie Sephus is a December 2007 cum laude graduate in computer engineering from Jackson, MS. Nashlie is an active member of the Society of Women Engineers, the National Society of Black Engineers, Increasing Minority Access to Graduate Education, and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She has served as a camp counselor for Bagley College engineering summer outreach camps and a volunteer mentor/tutor at Sudduth Elementary School in Starkville. Nashlie has been active with summer research opportunities participating in both the Summer Undergraduate Program for Engineering Research at Berkeley and IBM’s Extreme Blue Program in Raleigh, North Carolina. Nashlie also participated in two study abroad trips, one to France and one to Korea. She participated in the cooperative education program as well, co-oping at Miller Transporters.
Josie Smith is a senior industrial engineering major from Columbus, MS pursuing minors in both business and mathematics. Josie is a distinguished scholar and an active member of the ISE department’s student representatives. She has also served as an MSU Roadrunner since her freshman year and is a member of the honor societies of Phi Kappa Phi, Tau Beta Pi, Alpha Pi Mu, and Lambda Sigma. She was recognized in the fall of 2007 as the outstanding senior in industrial and systems engineering. Josie has also been active as a youth counselor at Starkville’s First United Methodist Church. Josie represents the ISE department at recruiting events such as the Breakfast of Champions, Scholar’s Recognition Day and the Step into Maroon Recruiting events.
LeKeith Terrell is a senior chemical engineering major from Brookhaven, MS. LeKeith began his academic career at Copiah-Lincoln Community College. He originally came to MSU as part of a chemistry/chemical engineering Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. He is an active member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the National Organization for the Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers, where he serves as vice-president, and the National Society of Black Engineers. LeKeith presented posters on his undergraduate research at the 2007 National AIChE Conference and completed two semesters in the cooperative education program at Georgia Pacific.
